OTHER WAYS TO HELP

Gift planning allows you to make a strategic charitable donation that will have a much greater impact than you might expect.

Usually available to the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences sometime in the future, a planned donation gives you the opportunity to establish your own personal legacy through a variety of affordable methods suited to your goals, needs and timeline.

These are many convenient affordable and tax-smart ways to make a strategic donation tailored to your goals, needs and timeline.

Donating publicly traded stocks and securities is a tax-smart way to support the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS).

  • You will receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the donated security and you will not pay tax on any capital gain.
  • You can support AIMS’s greatest needs or you may designate your gift to a priority that meets your interests.

Eligible gifts of stocks and securities include shares, debt obligations or rights listed on a designated stock exchange, a share of the capital stock of a mutual fund corporation, a unit of a mutual fund trust, an interest in a related segregated fund trust, or a prescribed debt obligation.

Benefits of gifts of stocks and securities:

  • The capital gain inclusion rate is zero when eligible stock or securities are donated directly to AIMS. If you sell the shares and donate the proceeds, you will be required to pay capital gains tax.
  • The value of your charitable tax receipt will be based on the market closing price on the day that AIMS receives your stock or securities in its brokerage account.

Donors making a gift of shares acquired through an employee stock option plan of a publicly traded company benefit from the favourable treatment of a zero capital gain inclusion rate.

To be eligible for this benefit, you must donate these shares in the same calendar year and within 30 days of their acquisition.

Gifts of securities through your estate:

When your executor donates securities, your estate does not pay capital gains tax on the appreciated securities and it also benefits from the full charitable tax receipt.

Wills are the central pillars of estate planning.

A gift by will, known as a bequest, provides you with the opportunity to support the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences once your needs and those of your loved ones have been met.

Funds are usually bequeathed as a:

  • A residual amount—for example, a share or a percentage of your estate; or
  • A specific dollar amount or item.

Benefits of making a bequest:

  • You have the use of the asset during your life.
  • A bequest is a tax-effective way of supporting U of T as it reduces taxes owed by your estate.
  • A bequest is revocable and can be modified if your financial circumstances change.

Sample bequest wording:

“To pay to African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Foundation (Canada) ___% of the residue of my estate [or the sum of $____________.] This gift is to be used for such purposes and designs as deemed appropriate by the Board of Directors at AIMS."

If you wish to direct your gift to a specific area or for a specific purpose, please contact us for detailed bequest language.

  • A charitable remainder trust allows you to arrange your legacy gift now and receive an immediate charitable tax receipt, while enjoying the interest income for life.
  • You may designate the proceeds of the charitable remainder trust to the AIMS’s greatest needs, or to an AIMS priority that meets your interests.

To establish a charitable remainder trust:

  • You irrevocably transfer assets (a sum of money, securities, personal or real property) into a trust to be managed by a trustee, such as a financial institution, yourself, a lawyer or other individual.
  • A trust document names you or others as the beneficiary of the interest income and names AIMS as the remainder beneficiary.

Benefits of a charitable remainder trust:

  • You receive a charitable tax receipt for the net present value of the assets in the trust.
  • You receive lifetime income from the donated asset.
  • These gifts provide privacy as they are not part of your will and are not included in probate.
  • If all or the majority of your estate is intended for charity, then a charitable remainder trust is a way to ensure you maximize the use of your charitable tax receipts.

A personal and meaningful way to give.

A wide range of non-cash donations, such as books, real estate, artwork, special equipment and other tangible personal property, are commonly referred to as gifts in kind. These gifts may enhance an AIMS centre.

The following types of property require special consideration and consultation with AIMS Canada to ensure that they support its academic priorities:

  • Real estate
  • Certified cultural property
  • Personal book collections

Benefits of a gift in kind:

  • You receive a charitable tax receipt for the appraised, fair market value determined on the day the gift is made;
  • Gifts in kind can be made during your lifetime, or through your estate by including instructions in your will;
  • You can designate your gift to any area of AIMS, such as libraries, a computer lab, or to special programs.
  • When the donation is made, the African Institute for Mathematical Science will either add the donated item(s) to its collections or it will liquidate the asset, depending on a mutually agreed-upon course of action.

Giving gifts in kind through your estate:

It is important to contact our office before arranging this type of bequest to ensure that it supports AIMS’s academic priorities.
